What Will My Scars Look Like After Breast Reduction?

As a procedure requiring incisions, some degree of scarring is an unavoidable aspect of breast reduction surgery. That being said, certain measures can be taken both during and after treatment to help ensure the final visibility of breast reduction scars is as minimal and inconspicuous as possible.

At 740 Park Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons typically use a breast reduction incision pattern that extends around the areola and then vertically down the breast to the inframammary fold. In contrast to other popular techniques, the incision does not usually continue horizontally along the inframammary crease, providing the benefit of a shorter scar.

After breast reduction, our doctors instruct patients to utilize special silicone strips throughout the healing process that are designed to offload tension on the incision lines. In addition, patients are advised to avoid certain actions or strenuous physical activities that may place strain on the incisions, as well as to limit sun exposure as much as possible. Following these recommendations and any further instructions given by your surgeon can help encourage better incision healing and ultimately lead to less noticeable scarring.

When all is said and done, breast reduction scars can generally be hidden underneath most styles of swimsuits, bras, and blouses, and the vast majority of patients acknowledge that the physical and psychological benefits of the procedure far surpass any concerns about scarring.

If you have any more questions about breast reduction, or if you are considering this rewarding procedure and would like to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced plastic surgeons, please don’t hesitate to contact our practice today.
