Following a mommy makeover, the amount of recovery and downtime necessary will depend on a variety of factors, including which (and how many) treatments were performed, the particular technique(s) utilized for each procedure, and the unique healing process of the individual. Since the majority of mommy makeovers tend to include both abdominal sculpting and breast enhancement, however, a general guideline for the extent of recovery often correlates to the procedure used to address the midsection – abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and/or liposuction.
When abdominoplasty is a component of the mommy makeover (with or without the addition of liposuction), most patients will require about a one to two-week period of rest following surgery. During this time, it is vital that a close friend or family member is nearby to assist with any childcare, heavy lifting, and various other everyday tasks, as too much strain could impede the healing process. Normal, non-strenuous routines can gradually be resumed as patients feel comfortable enough to do so, but any vigorous exercise and/or activities should be avoided for several weeks.
In the relatively uncommon case that liposuction is the only body sculpting treatment performed in conjunction with breast surgery, total recovery and downtime may be slightly reduced. For these patients, a return to non-strenuous daily activities is often possible after approximately one week, and all restrictions can typically be lifted after about three to four weeks.
Ultimately, this information is merely a guideline for what most patients can expect after a mommy makeover. For an individualized outline of the recovery process, I encourage you to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. He or she will be able to provide more personalized information based on your specific needs and goals.
