Is Liposuction Permanent?
This question is quite common among patients here at 740 Park Plastic Surgery. To answer it succinctly: Yes, the fat reduction results attained with liposuction can be permanent, but only if the individual leads a relatively healthy lifestyle consisting of a balanced diet and regular exercise following their procedure.
During the liposuction treatment, targeted fatty tissues are broken up and removed from the body, leaving behind a fraction of the original number of fat cells in the area. Since these remaining cells won’t multiply in number, the body contour created with liposuction can be extremely long-lasting as long as a reasonably stable weight is maintained thereafter. Should a considerable amount of weight be gained after surgery, the leftover fat cells in the region will grow larger in size to store added fat, impacting the aesthetic of the area. On the other hand, if significant weight is lost postsurgically, the residual fat cells will shrink in size.
It is for these reasons that patients need to be at or very near their ideal weight prior to liposuction in order to be considered a good candidate. Once optimal results have been achieved, consuming a nutritious diet and exercising on a routine basis can help prevent weight fluctuations, ultimately prolonging the effects of treatment.
