Also known as fat injections or fat grafting, fat transfer can often be a great option for men and women seeking to reduce signs of aging such as lines and wrinkles, as well as for individuals who desire to augment and/or enhance the contour of certain regions of the face and body. In contrast to cosmetic injectables and dermal fillers, fat transfer uses tissues extracted from your own body (via liposuction) to help counteract volume loss and sculpt targeted features for an improved and rejuvenated appearance. By employing the latest fat grafting techniques available, Dr. Stafford R. Broumand and Dr. Daniel Y. Maman can help you effectively achieve your cosmetic goals with long-lasting results using your own natural tissues.
What Can Fat Transfer Do for Me?
Depending on your specific concerns and desires, fat grafting can help:
- Minimize the appearance of facial lines, wrinkles, and folds
- Reduce the visibility of acne scarring and other skin injuries
- Improve the contour and/or volume of the chin, cheeks, lips, and other features of the face
- Augment and/or enhance the shape and size of the breasts
- Reconstruct the breasts following mastectomy

In addition to these enhancements, fat transfer can often produce a slimmer, more toned aesthetic in the region from which fatty tissues are harvested with liposuction. Since fat must be taken from areas that contain an ample amount of fatty tissue, some of the most common donor locations include the abdomen, hips, back, and thighs.
The Fat Transfer Procedure
Fat grafting does not require allergy testing prior to treatment, as fat tissues are taken directly from the patient’s body. To begin the procedure, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will first administer local anesthesia in the treatment area(s) to help minimize—or even eliminate—any potential discomfort. Liposuction will then be used to harvest fat tissues and sculpt the donor site. Once extracted, the collected fat is filtered, processed, and reinjected into the targeted region until an optimal shape and overall aesthetic is attained. Depending on the number of concerns being addressed, as well as whether the procedure is conducted alone or in conjunction with another treatment, fat transfer typically takes approximately one to two hours to complete.
Fat Transfer Recovery
After the fat grafting procedure, most patients can expect to resume normal, non-strenuous daily activities after about one week. Some minor swelling and/or bruising may be experienced in the treatment area(s) during this time, though these side effects should diminish relatively quickly. Little to no pain is reported by the majority of individuals throughout the recovery process, but over-the-counter medication can typically be used to manage any potential discomfort. The targeted regions may appear slightly more augmented than anticipated immediately following treatment, but this is due to the fact that a small percentage of the transferred fat will generally be reabsorbed by the body. In most instances, the final results of fat transfer are exceptionally natural-looking and long-lasting.
